We develop, pilot, evaluate, and scale innovative programming to improve healthcare access, quality, and affordability for our members, while addressing unmet health-related social needs and maximizing access to existing public benefits like SNAP. Innovations in our programming include the Enhanced Care Management Program, which coordinates care and closes gaps in care for our members with Intellectual Disabilities and Autism; a collaboration with Allegheny County Department of Human Services in which a community paramedicine team engages both high acuity individuals identified by the County as well as individuals on the waiver services waiting list for services in addressing social needs until a waiver slot is available; and numerous collaborations with community-based organizations employing community health workers to engage UPMC members in needed preventive healthcare and other resources. These initiatives attempt to create and define value for our members and the healthcare system outside the traditional space where healthcare is delivered.

The Center for Social Impact has developed a pragmatic approach to evaluation efforts for these innovations that pairs implementation science and rigorous research with the understanding that business and associated decisions often happen at a much faster pace than that of the formal research process. We center health and social equity at the heart of our work. Our guiding principles are:
  • Real-world approach. CSI will continue to bring rigorous research and evidence-based practices with real-world, real-time evaluation with qualitative feedback from lived experience to collectively translate information into interventions that will likely be successful and improve outcomes.
  • Solid structure. The structure includes an evaluation strategy for each portfolio of work and a specific evaluation plan for each program or initiative. These plans define specific goals for each initiative; measure key performance indicators at the community and member level; incorporate varied data sources; tie in with ongoing government or community initiatives when possible; and include exploring potential partnerships.
