Mission and Vision

Established in 2011, the UPMC Center for High-Value Health Care (Center) advances the health and healthcare of the members, patients, and communities that UPMC serves by generating new knowledge and insights through real-world health services research and program evaluation.
For more than a decade, our work has helped UPMC keep pace with the ever-evolving healthcare landscape. In conjunction with the Centers for Value-Based Pharmacy Initiatives and Social Impact, we have grown our team and broadened our collaborations to support our organization as it addressed pressing healthcare challenges and opportunities, such as telehealth, value-based care, and health equity. While we are data-driven, we let the experiences and perspectives of our members and other key collaborators shape and inform the important questions we seek to answer.

Our Mission

Advance U.S. healthcare policy and practice through the development and dissemination of innovative service delivery and payment models that support value-driven healthcare.

Our Vision

Establish the UPMC integrated delivery and finance system as a valued partner in national, state, and local efforts to improve healthcare quality and efficiency as well as the overall health of the populations we serve.

Our Approach

We work diligently to achieve our mission and vision by using evidence to drive continuous improvement within the UPMC integrated delivery and finance systems, as well as with our external provider and health system and research collaborators. We also share results and lessons learned with other stakeholders interested in spreading sustainable best practices through a learning health system approach.

  • Leverage the UPMC payer-provider laboratory to design, implement, and test models of care that support the quintuple aim of improving health outcomes, reducing costs, and enhancing both the patient and provider experience.
  • Build and strengthen collaborations across UPMC, the University of Pittsburgh, and other academic and community partners, including patients and their families.
  • Emphasize incorporation of input from key healthcare stakeholders to ensure the real-world applicability of our work.
  • Utilize advanced data collection and analysis and predictive modeling capabilities within the UPMC Insurance Services Division to inspire, inform, and evaluate model design.
  • Translate research rapidly into practice through an active agenda of publication, presentation, and professional networking.
